Well Guided Treatment – Fears, Phobias, Anxieties, OCD

Article by Gary Hyman

There are many different definitions of fear, but an adequate definition can be summarized as: “Fear is an unpleasant emotion of anxiety, apprehension or being afraid of an event that may or may not take place and is a possible threat to you in one way or another.” This threat can either be real or imagined.

OCD, on the other hand is an anxiety disorder and the compulsive and obsessive behaviours are really just symptoms of the anxieties themselves. Therefore treatment leading to cure of OCD lies within curing the root cause of the anxiety and tackling the actual fear and phobia head-on. So, without a doubt it is absolutely necessary to assess yourself and understand exactly what is causing the fear, phobia or anxiety.

It is quite obvious that most of us have experienced fear at one point or another in our lives, but did you ever realize that you may actually be a victim of a phobia? Phobia is usually an impractical but persistent fear of whatever you fear. For instance, some of us are victims of Acrophobia – fear of heights, or Glossophobia – fear of public speaking. So the big question is: Is there a way to get rid of these fears, anxieties and phobias?

Well, like always there is a solution and all it takes is a bit of an effort, patience and persistence from your side. The first thing you have to do (as I mentioned before) is understand that as the definition itself says, most of our fears are imaginary, phobias are impractical and OCD is rooted within feelings of anxiousness.

A closer analysis of your fears will always help you develop a clearer picture of your phobias, and as such you will find that most of your fears are not at all dangerous. Writing down the benefits that you would get from overcoming your fear is also a splendid way of fighting your fear.

It is also important to realize that one of the best forms of defense against your phobias is a counter attack. That means that once you confront your phobia head on you would surely not be that afraid the next time. While doing this you need to go ahead one step at a time. For instance if your fear is fear of heights, try looking down from a tall building each time from a higher floor – maybe start doing this activity with a friend and starting from the 1st floor. Every step that you take towards eradicating you fear, anxiety or phobia will give you enough confidence to take the next step, and if you suffer from OCD this will help towards eradicating the OCD behaviours too.

Remember, the first step is the most difficult but after that you might be surprised as to how easy it is to treat and cure fears, phobias, anxieties, and OCD’s.
