Low Self-esteem Symptoms and How to Deal With Them

Low Self-esteem Symptoms and How to Deal With Them

Article by Eran Roseman

Self-esteem is one of the hallmarks of a happy person. If your self-esteem suffers so will other parts of your life. They are all interconnected in a symbiotic relationship and one cannot thrive without the other (happiness and high self-esteem). Some low self-esteem symptoms are easier to spot than others. Some are incredibly and even disturbingly easy to detect due to the nature of the symptom.

What are some low self-esteem symptoms?

1. Low self-esteem can manifest itself in actions like selfishness. When your self-esteem is low you find yourself grasping at straws to figure out your life. Self-esteem is important for happiness because high self-esteem basically means you have all your ducks in a row, you comprehend what you do and why you do it and you do it to help other people or to become a productive member of society.

If you have high self-esteem, selfishness is not often a part of it. There is a negative degree where confidence can appear as high self-esteem but in reality confidence is a spawn of high self-esteem and self-image, but high self-esteem doesn’t usually spawn from confidence- you need self-esteem to feel and act confident.

That brings us to the other thing you need to be aware of. Confidence can be faked for the purpose of manipulating someone- you can have low self-esteem and “look” confident because you can train body language and learn how to manipulate people and appear confident but it’s really an empty shell and you feel empty when you do this.

2. Low self-esteem can cause you to not see the full picture. If you don’t fully understand yourself or haven’t truly found yourself, you don’t know who you are, where you’re going, or you don’t have confidence in yourself- your very decisions will be made based on either partial information or a biased opinion that may be convoluted by your minds own filters (designed to protect you from doing something again but often we self inflict ourselves into a prison that contaminates the very way we think).

If you can’t comprehend the full picture or your selfishness in disposition or both, you will often act inappropriately and cause problems to magnetize towards you. Often people in this spot will have a warped sense of reality and that causes them to believe that they aren’t wrong- but everybody else is mistaken. Self-esteem tends to come with common sense, low self-esteem tends to give you a convoluted view of the world at large and especially the world you live in (your personal life).

3. Low self-esteem symptoms can be responsible for a lot of problems in your life. Low self-esteem can cause someone to desperately try to feel wanted and loved and this makes you do irrational things to get that attention. Having low self-esteem can make you paranoid and this can lead to a long list of problems from the way you react to people to how you react to people. People with low self-esteem tend to complain more, have a pessimistic view of the world, and it can make you feel crazy.

The bottom line here is that a high self-esteem is as healthy as exercising and eating right. Self-esteem is how you see yourself, how you believe your world is, and it can drastically affect the way you feel. High self-esteem leads to better relationships, a better more open-minded view of the world and everyone you come across, and even the confidence to get the job you want instead of staying at a job because you’re afraid to lose the job and fear you can’t get a better one. Someone with high self-esteem will tend to believe in themselves where as someone with low self-esteem usually doesn’t but mainly because they simply don’t know themselves enough (their core self not what others tell them they are supposed to be) to actually come to a rational decision about their abilities.

Understanding Why Self-Esteem isn’t a Personal Matter.

Article by Francis Macansantos

Self-esteem is a phrase that has come to mean a lot of different things. In some ways self-esteem can be a self descriptive phrase, but it surely has also become some controversial concept with several meanings. We know self-esteem is extremely important to have, but have also been taught that you can have too much self-esteem. You’ll also find many derivatives of self-esteem we discuss that may confuse us once we try to define self esteem; things like self-confidence, self-worth, self-assurance, self-love, self-acceptance, self-assertiveness, and self-responsibility.

Like the health of the body is a consequence or effect of many inter-related causes, so it can be with self-esteem. If we wish to increase our health, we could only do so by working on it indirectly- by working on our diet, our exercising, our mindset, our natural environment. So it is using self-esteem. If we prefer to increase our self-esteem, you can easily only do so by focusing on it indirectly- by working on those things that create it.

“To trust one’s mind and to know that one is worthy of happiness is the essence of self-esteem. “- Nathaniel Branden.

Self-esteem is the relationship that you have with yourself, your sensation of personal worth. Self-esteem might therefore feel like a totally private issue. However, your self-esteem affects not only your own life, but it affects the lives of everyone around you.

Your amount of self-esteem affects how you treat others you interact with or avoid interaction with. You likely have been the victim involving someone with low self-esteem one self. Maybe a colleague who was trying to impose his or her way on others, a teacher who did their own best to make your daily life miserable, or maybe simply grumpy neighbour. The best (and worst) example with the negative impacts of other’s low self-esteem is perhaps each time a parent with low self-esteem behaves within a non-loving manner towards their own children who in turn will grow up with a low self-esteem and do the identical to other people. Every word that you really say to others, every gesture and every single action is influenced because of your self-esteem. If you contain a low self-esteem you will generally contain a more negative effect on other people.

Your level of self-esteem is thus obviously just not a personal matter. Compare in your mind a country where all the political leaders have high self-esteem which has a country in which the many leaders have low self-esteem. If I lived in the country with low self-esteem politicians I might demonstrate for sending every one of them on a self-esteem course!

Your self-esteem has larger impact over other people’s lives than your abilities in mathematics, physics, new music, history or any many other school subject. Yet self-esteem is not really officially taught in colleges. When I was a child, we had a textbook called “I am fantastic enough”. Now as a mature I can guess that it book was supposed to educate us self-esteem, but most of the students (including me) hated those classes because they were so boring. The teachers did not recognize how to teach self-esteem to young kids. They probably didn’t even realise why they were supposed to teach it. Fortunately or unfortunately, these classes were almost no.

Teachers should be been competing in how to help their students to get maximum higher self-esteem. There should also be self-esteem trainers in all big companies so that will their employees can carry on and develop their self-esteem. This might be a huge investment to both schools and the companies because of the benefits that higher self-esteem among the students and employees might bring.

Leaving people to learn how to raise their self-esteem by themselves is too risky. The whole world would benefit if more people learned methods to develop a high self-esteem.

Just like the health of the body is a consequence or effect of many inter-related causes, so it is with self-esteem. If we wish to increase our health, we can only do so by working on it indirectly- by working on our diet, our exercise, our mindset, our environment. So it is with self-esteem. If we wish to increase our self-esteem, we can only do so by working on it indirectly- by working on those things that contribute to it.
